Ansel Adams was born February 20, 1902 in San Francisco, California. Beginning from a very young age, Adams was intrigued by the outdoors. He enjoyed taking walks and exploring his surroundings. Adams was extremely successful and is known as one of the best photographers of all time, for which he has received numerous awards both during his lifetime as well as after his death. His photos focus mainly on nature and wilderness preservation, which is something that captured my interest. His black and white photographs of nature serve their purpose of preserving the pure beauty nature holds. Adams strongly believed in the possibility of humans living in harmony and balance with their environment, and was often strongly criticized for not including humans in his art. He played a large part in the protection and conservation of the environment, as well as increasing consciousness of other people to his efforts. This has contributed to his memory throughout the years following his death in 1984. Adams’ mark on photography after he left the world is something that highly influenced my own photos. As you can tell from my own gallery, I am a huge fan of environmental pictures. However, in agreeance with Adams’ belief that humans can live in harmony with nature, some of my photos also include a person. I believe that these two beautiful elements have the ability to be captured in one frame without losing the meaning behind what the artist wishes to portray.
